So there I was, out and about earlier this week, when what should happen to come on the jukebox but the classic Gun Club song "Sex Beat?" Naturally, it made me remember the message Luke Sex Beet had sent me a little while back, proffering a new ditty of theirs that was, as he put it, cleaner than other stuff I've heard. Fear not, loves, he didn't mean cleaned up musically. Just production-wise.
The song comes from a split with Human Eye, and that band's somewhat campy, 50s b-movie done modern track "Martian Girl" isn't half bad either. But Sex Beet proves themselves winners once again with their sleazy, somewhat snarling take on a girl group gem gone so very rightly wrong. In my book, singing about breaking hearts is where it's at. I already love these dudes, now it's your turn.

When they're not off wreaking havoc and involving themselves in international incidents, Sex Beet makes some damn fine music. When they're not causing trouble, these gents abide by the sneering rock ethos of The Black Lips, all snarling and vicious and undeniably killer. Yeah, I've posted about them a few times of late. But if I were you, friends, I'd get used to seeing them here. For your listening perusal this time, they're going and showing off by successfully covering Sonic Youth's "Dirty Boots." All that furious, ferocious fuzz and howling vocals really get the blood pumping, no? mp3: Dirty Boots (Sonic Youth Cover) (Sex Beet from their forthcoming LP)
Y'all, we're gonna keep giving til there's nothin left to give, let me just tell you. Keeping it in the Christmas spirit, here's a little ditty from one of my new favorite bands, Sex Beet. These miscreants know how to do it; they'll shimmy and they'll shake and they'll pretty much blow your house down. Obviously, you should probably start loving them now, that is if you don't already. According to Luke Sex Beet, the band is now decamping in Copenhagen, thanks to a rather scandalous legal issue that I'd have to kill anyone I told, so in lieu of that, here's a little holiday jam courtesy of Sex Beet and their amigo and current tour companion Jerry Tropicano. mp3: Christmas Line (Sex Beet & Jerry Tropicano)
As you know, we love Best Coast here at LET. And having asked them to open their UK tour for them, Best Coast obviously loves them some Sex Beet. Which means, as you might well imagine, that we too love Sex Beet.
They are, perhaps, London's answer to those Austinian scamps The Strange Boys and their ilk. You see, as with TSB Sex Beet has some obvious love for years gone by, mixing the breathless glee of some late fifties/early sixties simplicity and surf vibes with a hearty dose of ferocious, almost shoegazing fuzz, not to mention a wee bit of attitude as well. And yet, there seems to be something even better, even fresher about them. They are endearing, they are brash, and they are a perfect fit for a Best Coast tour. I'd remember their name if I were you, little lovvies, because they might just be on the precipice of something big. At least, they fucking well should be.
